ST. BERNARDUS ABT 12 from Brouwerij St. Bernard is a traditional abbey ale brewed in the classic style of Belgium's Trappist Monks. It is almost ebony in colour, smooth, creamy and full bodied with big richness of texture that is almost oily and very assertive, like a warming coconut brandy. St Bernardus has a history which is connected to two Trappist breweries, Mont Des Cats (Cheese) and the infamous Westvleteren (Beer). Shortly after the second world war the Trappist monastry St Sixtus in Westvleteren was looking to commercialise their beers, in step St Bernardus.

Dark, rich & fruity.I think this is the strongest of the St. Bernardus beers at an impressive 10%, not 10.5% quoted in the description above. It is a dark, sweet but not too sweet Quadruple from a brewery in Watou, West Flanders. There is a small amount of sediment in each bottle and Micheal Jackson, known as the 'Beer Hunter' wrote over thirty years ago that all of St. Bernardus' beers are re-fermented in the bottle. This sediment will do you no harm if you drink it but by careful pouring you can leave most of it in the bottle. This, like all beers from Watou, is a triumph of the brewers art and should be tried by everyone with an interest in Belgian beers.

Excellent.Lovely quadrupel beer. The nearest thing you can get to Westvleteren beer which is very hard to obtain.
