Westmalle Dubbel is a dark, reddish-brown Trappist beer with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. The creamy head has the fragrance of special malt and leaves an attractive lace pattern in the glass. The flavour is rich and complex, herby and fruity with a fresh-bitter finish. It is a balanced quality beer with a soft feel in the mouth and a long, dry aftertaste. Since 1856 the monks have been brewing a dark Trappist beer.
Wwestmalle Abbey, called Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van het Heilig Hart, belongs to the Cistercian Order, which was founded in the eleventh century.
Westmalle Brewery is one of the most famous Belgian Trappist breweries and with good reason. They produce just three beers but are revered by every Belgian beer lover. The tripel is widely recognised as one of the best beers in the world with its unique yeasty aroma and insane depth of flavour. Their dubbel is almost as loved; a deep amber beer with lots of caramel, raisin and almost rum like flavours.
