Leeds Monastic Brews: Northern Monk

Nestled in the rich culture of Leeds town, Northern Monk brewery was born. Starting off as a gypsy brewery, from their family home The brainchild of entrepreneur Russell Bissett and craft brewer Brian Dickson, using other people’s breweries across the north and selling at farmers markets.

In 2014 they found and restored a grade 2 listed building and turned it into a brewery, tap room and arts/events space.

Inspired by their northern surroundings and the history of monastic brewing practiced around the world, or trappiest beer as its also known. Some excellent examples of this come from monk brewed beers like: Orval.

Big believers in working and giving back to their community, they have a patron’s project, where they work with local communities and artists on one of can designs on beers, alongside charities to put money back into the North. Started in 2013 by two beer lovers with just £5,000.

Now Leeds’ Northern Monk is one of the world’s Top 100 breweries on one of Yorkshire’s fastest growing companies and we cannot wait to see where they go.
