About this product
This Flemish red from Verhaeghe is truly unique. The amber beer is brewed in the normal fashion and then put into oak barrels for many years to take on that oak character and turn slowly sour. It has a wonderful oak and cherry aroma, with a hint of balsamic vinegar. It starts beautifully sweet and melts away into a soft, sour cherry-like beer known as a Flemish Red.

  1. My absolute favourite
    Quality

I drink a lot of different beers and I enjoy them. I love all sorts. But as soon as it gets warm there is nothing better than a Duchesse, with its rich velvety texture and its sharp fruity sourness. Amazing!

    Red ale from Verhaeghe
    Quality

This beer is described as a Flemish red-brown beer and I think this is a first for me. I've been to West Flanders many times but don't think I've ever had a red ale this dark and Duchesse de Bourgogne is a beer I've got no previous knowledge of. I did get a branded glass from Beer Merchants to try this beer in, I believe the beer is available in 25cl bottles but a 33cl bottle is too big to fit in their 25cl glass. This beer is quite sweet, as dark beers from Flanders often are, and contains wheat and barley malt but no spices. It is matured in oak barrels where it takes on a darker colour and hints of cherries, we are told. There is no sediment present in the bottles other than a microscopic amount and it is clear in the glass. It is not my favourite Flemish beer - I prefer Blonds or Golden ales - but there is nothing wrong with it and at 6.2% it's a powerful glass-full that may suit people who prefer darker or sweeter beers.
