A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper colour.
Founded as a weekend project by two friends, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos, De Ranke is very unusual for a Belgian brewery because it produces hop-forward beers.
This is a product of the De Ranke Brewery and is a wonderful coppery coloured beer. It is unpasteurised and unfiltered so every bottle contains a significant amount of spent yeast residue so careful handling of the bottle and gentle pouring will result in a clear-ish beer in the glass. It is relatively light compared to other Belgian Xmas beers at 7% but is not short on flavour.

A good strong Belgian winter ale. Hoppy and slightly bitter with notes of liquorice and a dry finish.
