The history of Munich's Hacker-Pschorr goes all the way back to 1417 and even plays a leading role in the foundation of Oktoberfest, when Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria asked them to brew a special beer for his Wedding in 1810. That party became the annual celebration, and the festival is still held on land donated by Joseph Pschorr who was brewmaster at the time.
Darker than the usual German beer this Märzen is wonderfully refreshing and easy to drink after a hot October afternoon plodding around the garden preparing for autumn. It's not often that you can say 'hot October afternoon' and 'preparing for autumn' in the same sentance when talking of gardening in England! Back to the beer - this Märzen is not a lightweight by German standards at 5.8% and is a beautiful dark golden colour. It is however easy quaffable and a 33 cl bottle once drained leaves you reaching for another. Hacker Pschorr is deservedly one of 'the big six' brewers in Munich and brew some spectacular beers. This bottle, brewed for the American market, is far too small for a beer this good.
