Dubbel Beers

Dubbel Beers

Dubbel beers are a classic Belgian style, oozing with a sweet, malty complexity. Lying between blonde ales and bocks in the maltiness spectrum, and less heavy-hitting than dark ales, dubbels, also known as Trappist or abbey dubbels, are perfect if you enjoy a sweeter, more aromatic beer and don’t mind an ABV boost to boot. Dubbel beers get their name from the fact that (originally) they needed double the ingredients of their weaker-ABV brethren. Historically brewed by monks across Belgium in the country’s six Trappist abbeys, many of the best examples are still produced in this manner, though so-called secular breweries across the world have since cottoned on and produced their own dubbel beers. Dubbel beers can vary from almost jet black to a reddish copper colour but are always loaded with raisin, bread and stone fruit flavours, plus a little banana from the yeast. Caramel, nutty, and chocolate tones are also quite common in dubbels. If you enjoy classic European beers and Belgian styles like quadruples, lambics and blonde ales, be sure to sample some of Beer Merchants’ dubbel abbey beers.
