St. Bernardus Pater 6 from Brouwerij Sint-Bernardus is a top fermentation beer, re-fermented in the bottle with an alcohol content of 6,70%. Chestnut in colour with a full taste.
St Bernardus has a history which is connected to two Trappist breweries, Mont Des Cats (Cheese) and the infamous Westvleteren (Beer). Shortly after the second world war the Trappist monastry St Sixtus in Westvleteren was looking to commercialise their beers, in step St Bernardus.
Another brilliant beer from St. Bernardus. This beer is described as 'Amber' but it's quite dark and strong (6.7%); it is, however an excellent beer and is very drinkable, there must be secondary fermentation in the bottle as every bottle has the dregs of spent yeast. I wholeheartedly agree with watouman's review and I long to visit Watou. Having stayed many times in Ieper, the first time I visited I had 'Het Kappital' on draught with an excellent steak in the Market Square. The last time I stayed in Ieper we visited Poperinge where I was reacquainted with Hommelbeir but this time on draught - I'd only had it in bottles before. This is one of the world's greatest beers and even though I'm not convinced that it qualifies as an Abbey Beer that's not going to affect my continued patronage of this outstanding brewery.

I have been a Belgium tourist and Belgium Bier fan for years (2009)
main reason for choosing the Poperinge and Watou area was
simply because that was where St Barnardus and Van Ecche breweries were!
This wonderful strong dark bier is one I noticed the locals drinking in that area
Its a lovely drink at any time BUT after a drive from work in traffic its my *Fix*
