About this product

A world-famous beer and rightly so. This Belgian Trappist beer is a delicious slightly sweet pale ale brewed with subtle, citrusy hops. So far, so normal, but then the beer is dry hopped and bottle fermented with Brettanomyces, which over time eats all the sugar in the beer and leaves behind a herbal-dry beer unlike any other drink in the world. Loaded with umami like flavours, a touch of caramel and a strong zesty orange pith flavour, it’s truly one of the best beers ever made.

    Plenty going on

A great, well-balanced & complex dark beer. If you're an ale drinker who doesn't have much truck with 'lager' then give this a go. It may change your mind.

    World classic beer

A lovely mix of butterscotch and brett. It's spawned many imitations but few can hold a candle to the original!

    Trappist original
    Quality

The only beer made by the monks in the Abbaye D'Orval there is a wonderful story about the fish with a gold ring in its mouth that appears on the label. At 6.2% and bottle fermented I expected more spent yeast to be present in the bottle but found very little, it is a little clouded but is a deeply golden colour in the glass. This beer qualifies as a true 'Trappist' and is a complex taste (we are told by those that know a lot more than me), all I can say is that I enjoyed drinking this unique beer again and I'll be back for more.

    Classic belgian ale
    Quality

Complex, dry and earthy. It always tastes a bit different, depending on when you open the bottle - more hoppy when young, and more yeasty if you let it age. Great beer either way!
  9. Fantastic beer if this is what you are into

Fantastic beer if this is what you're into! And top drawer customer service after I received a broken bottle from DPD!

    lovely classic Belgian sour beer
    Quality

All time favourite introduction to the sour beers that are now becoming very popular. Light brown in appearance with a good foamy head. Slightly sour tasting, rich malty sweetness with a dry finish

    And did those feet...
    Quality

Orval - the benchmark Trappist ale. Copper-coloured, creamy head (pour carefully to get it all in its beautiful glass). Complex flavours topped off with that funky farmhouse yeasty taste the Belgians call " the feet of angels". Probably my favourite beer in all the world.
