Bitter Beers

Bitter Beers

Bitter is an old-fashioned British term for a whole host of styles that have now diverged and got their own categories. It was used to describe any bitter beer that didn't fall into the category of lager, porter or stout, so once included IPAs, red ales, golden ales and more. These days it is used to describe classic British styles with solid malty backbones and a light citrus or earthy hop profile, so styles like best bitters, ESBs and milds. Despite being seen as old fashioned, many American brewers are making this style, and there are still some fantastic examples of it being brewed in the UK too.
