Liefmans brewery was founded way back in 1679, and was owned by the same family right up until the 20th century when it was acquired by Duvel Moortgat. History aside, what makes Liefmans unique is the water it uses, which is very high in calcium and iron, giving all their beers a darker colour and pronounce bitter finish that balances with sourness gained from the wild yeast that infect the beers when they leave them open to the air.
