Anchor Brewing Company was founded in 1896, making it one of the oldest breweries in the United States. Despite this, it's more associated with the rise of US craft beer in the 1980s. The brewery was close to closure in 1965 when it was bought by Frederick Louis Maytag III, a local businessman looking for a new project. He turned its fortunes around, learning to brew from scratch and improving the process to make a cleaner, better version of their now world-famous Anchor Steam Beer. Along with leading lights such as Brooklyn and Sierra Nevada, Anchor helped kick-start the craft brewing revolution and bring better beer to the country. They now produce a wide range of beautiful beers, including a fantastic porter and Liberty ale.
