What’s in Hobo?

Hops: Hobo Czech Lager is brewed using a trio of Czech Saaz hops, all grown in Northern Bohemia’s mineral-rich, red soil.  Saaz:  The Saaz hop is hailed for its high quality aroma. The variety has developed over many years from hops grown around the town of Zatec. It’s one of only four ‘noble’ hops and adorns the lager with subtle spice, a citrus zest and a bracing biter bite. It’s grassy, herbal, earthy and spicy all at the same time. Sladek:  A hybrid Saaz hop variety loved by lagers because it can be used for both its bitterness and its clean grassy and earthy aroma. In Hobo Czech Lager, it is added for its aromatic qualities – floral and pine.  Premiant: Grown in Zatec, Premiant bring beautiful balanced bitterness and gives the lager its snappy, satisfying quench quality.

Moravian Malted Barley: All the malted barley is two-row spring barley grown in Moravia, a region between bohemia and Slovakia which is famed for its lush fertile soil enriched by a seven-strong lattice of rivers.

Water: Sourced and sand-filtered from 15m below the brewery cellars.

Yeast: The brewery propagates its own bespoke yeast and also oversees the library for all Czech yeast.

Augustiner Helles

Since 1328 Augustiner beer had been brewed within the monastery of the Augustinian Brotherhood near the cathedral of Munich. The Helles is the classic Munich beer, a light lager style beer, very crisp and soft with notes of citrus and hops with a slightly sweet finish.

Augustiner Lagerbier Hell is the most popular beer from the Augustiner brewery. It is a light lager beer that is given a prolonged secondary fermentation phase.

Augustiner Helles is a particularly mild, sparkling, refreshing and easily digestible at the same time. Uniquely in its taste, a benefit for each beer connoisseur. Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops Although this beer is highly regarded it is not intended to be stored for long periods as the best before dates are shorter than for other beers.

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock

The History of Celebrator Doppelbock:  Originally brewed at a monastery in northern Italy, "double bock" was quickly introduced by Bavarian brewers to compete with bock. Doppelbock names end with the suffix "-ator."

Taste A rich, dark elixir with cascading layers of malt complexity balanced by elegant hops. Notes of toffee, caramel, elegant dark-malt roastiness, and pure malt. Pinpoint conditioning and semi-dry finish.

Leikeim Schwarzbier

Duvel Triple Hop - Sorachi Ace - 2013

The first two batches of Duvel Tripel Hop were brewed with Saaz-Saaz, Styrian Golding and Amarillo, then Citra - now, Sorachi Ace. From now on Duvel Tripel Hop will have a different hop every year that will be added in the brewing process as well as being used for dry hopping. For 2013 this hop is Sorachi Ace.

Brooklyn Black Ops

Barrel-aged in Woodford Reserve bottles. Brooklyn Black Ops does not exist. However, if it did exist, it would be a robust stout concocted by the Brooklyn brewing team under cover of secrecy and hidden from everyone else at the brewery. Supposedly, "Black Ops" was aged for four months in bourbon barrels, bottled flat, and re-fermented with Champagne yeast, creating big chocolate and coffee flavors with a rich underpinning of vanilla-like oak notes. They say there are only 1000 cases. We have no idea what they’re talking about.

Brooklyn Sorachi Ace

Brooklyn Sorachi Ace is a classic saison, a cracklingly dry, hoppy unfiltered golden farmhouse ale, but featuring rare Sorachi Ace hop.Fermented with our special Belgian ale strain, we add Sorachi Ace hops post-fermentation. After 100% bottle re-fermentation with Champagne yeast, the beer emerges with a bright spicy lemon zest aroma. It tastes like sunshine in a glass, and that suits us just fine, especially with seafood dishes and fresh cheeses.

Camden Town Doppelbock (aka Fükdahator)

The story: “Don’t play what I play, play what I’m not playing.” That’s the vibe. We aren’t German brewmasters, we don’t know the deep secrets of the style, we don’t want to use the classic German hops and we don’t have a tank free for three months. But we do know what we want from a Doppelbock, so we took the idea apart and put it back together. German style, American accent, London execution. A beer with our rules, because we can, because no one else does. It’s Doppelbock done our way. And done to celebrate 2012. Raise your glass to that.

The taste: A dark ruby colour, it’s got a full malt body with toffee, baked bread and dark bitter chocolate, then the American hops give pine, spice and strawberries sweets, all delicate and intriguing before hop and malt bitterness chime with spirit warmth at the end. It’s clean and smooth, warming yet light, complex. It’s our end of your treat.

Dark Star Imperial Stout 2012 Vintage

A full-bodied and rich Imperial Stout brewed with roasted barley and target hops before being matured to create a complex black beer.

Hanssens Oude Gueuze

As with all Gueuzes, Hanssens is a mixture of several vintages to produce a lambic which is refreshingly fruity. This is the result of blending different lambics of different ages. The second fermentation takes place inside the bottles and therefore they are stored for minimum six months in constant temperature kept cellars.

Fässla Zwergla

Zwergla - bottom-fermented lager beer A dark, almost mahogany colored beer, soft in the trunk, slightly malty with a soft, round finish. Pleasantly tart with a subdued hop flavor. Original gravity: 13.5% Alcohol: 6.0%

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary ETA Hoffmann in Bamberg was brewed in limited quantities. The writer and musician Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann lived from 1808 to 1813 in Bamberg.

Goose Island Bourbon County Stout

"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it."

Craft Beer London

Craft Beer London — which celebrates the city’s best pubs, bars and breweries — is written by former Independent beer writer Will Hawkes, who has also produced an iphone app of the same name. The book, which is published by Vespertine Press, includes a foreword by Evin O’Riordain, head brewer at The Kernel, and essays on London’s beer-drenched history and the current brewing revival. Will, now a freelance journalist, said he was delighted with how the book had turned out. “I think Craft Beer London will be a great guide for people who are new to beer, and a real treat for those who know the world of malt and hops a little better,” he said. “On top of that, it looks beautiful. Designer Matt Barker has done a tremendous job and the pictures are great, too.”

Aigua de Moritz

Old Foghorn Ale

An English tradition revived in San Francisco.

The malty sweetness, fruitiness, unique hop aroma and high original gravity of Old Foghorn® Barleywine Style Ale is to beer much as port is to wine.

Old Foghorn® is brewed based on traditional English barleywine methods. Beavertown Imperial Smog

Alaskan Smoked Porter

Smoked Beer. Known as "rauchbier" in Germany, smoke-flavored beers were virtually unknown in the U.S. until Alaskan Smoked Porter was developed in 1988. Alaskan Smoked Porter is produced in limited "vintages" each year on November 1 and unlike most beers, may be aged in the bottle much like fine wine.

Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain Leo Weisse

The Maxlrainer Leo Weisse (wheat beer)) receives its full character by the traditional, in house, top-fermented yeast. Connoisseurs appreciate the delightful weißbier aroma as soon as the beer is opened. Aged in the brewery’s cellar, the Leo Weisse is unfiltered and is bottled with its cloudy appearance in the cellar. It therefore contains all the good and nutritional elements of malt and yeast. Spaten Hell

Sold as Münchner Hell in Germany, München in the UK and Premium in North America. This beer is their brewery speciality. In 1894 Spaten became the first brewery in Munich to produce this brand of light lager. Golden in color with a well-balanced hop-flavor. The full rounded body is a superb balance between hops and a malty sweetness.

De Ranke Pere Noel

A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper colour.

Poperings Hommelbier

Especially created and brewed in 1981, for the celebration of the 3 yearly hops festivities in Poperinge, the hoppy, golden-bronze, ale Hommelbier is considered worldwide to be a tribute to the art of beer craftsmanship. Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, the botanical name for the hop plant. Poperings Hommelbier is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts, soft water, from the brewery's own well; Brewers' Gold and Challenger hops, both grown in Poperinge; and top-fermented with a very attenuative yeast that precipitates quickly. It is primed with white sugar, and re-yeasted for bottle-conditioning. This ale pours a cloudy straw yellow, with a tight and fleeting white head that left decent lacing. There’s a light but inviting green hop, yeast and pale malt aroma. Palate entry is full-bodied, but refreshingly spicy and thirst quenching at colder temperatures. Mid-palate reveals citrus orange rind and grapefruit notes along with a honeysuckle sweetness that is nicely balanced by a solid Hallertau hop bill. It also has a late, spicy, cumin-seed, dryness, again from the hops. The carbonation is light, small fresh bubbles Dough and yeast in the finish.

Bush de Nuits - Wine Barrel Aged Barley Wine

Like the Brasserie Dubuisson’s renowned Scaldis Prestige, Scaldis Prestige de Nuits is aged in oak barrels for six months. But Prestige de Nuits is made of Scaldis Noel aged in Bourgogne barrels from the world famous "Nuits St. Georges" vineyard. The result is an ale of extraordinary complexity and depth.

Boon Framboise

Framboise is Brussels' summer drink!

Raspberry Lambic was once a rarity and was only a few weeks in the summer produced.Brouwerij Frank Boon was the first in the summer of 1976 again a raspberry lambic to prepare. More than 300 grams per liter of fresh raspberry lambic give Framboise Boon its fresh fruity flavor. In turn supports the young lambic taste of raspberries. But not the lambic dominates, but the raspberries. Of course we do not use artificial flavors, only real raspberries. This Framboise Boon has an alcohol volume of 6.2%. Drink it when it is fresh.

Mort Subite Witte Lambic - Blanche

Brewery Note :

A limited Summer Edition of a Witbier & Lambic blend.

Also known as "Mort Subite Blanche", the brewery uses different names for the same beer.

Normally only Found on draugh in Belgian cafés owned by the Alken Maes/Heineken group.

The bottled version however is new and sold exclusively, NORMALLY,  in a Belgian supermarket during this year's summer.

Taste?

Pours a slightly hazy light blonde colour with a fair white head.

Aroma of apricot, coriander, lemon, caramel and yeast.

Similar flavours with moderate carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Lovely lingering apricot, caramel, coriander and lemon again. Very nice.

St Feuillien Black Saison

The second collaboration with Brasserie St Feuillien, a "Friendship Brew", is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

This is a hybrid between an Oatmeal Stout and a Belgian Saison.

This is a blond xmas ale. Nice white head, good carbonation. Hoppy smell. Soft smooth taste.

Timmermans Tradition Blanche Lambicus

Timmermans Tradition Blanche Lambicus Pours a cloudy light golden colour with a thick white head. Aroma of apricot, caramel and lemon. Similar flavours with heavy carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. L:ight, dry and refreshing. .

Troubadour Westkust

A Black Imperial IPA. Very dark color, almost black, with generous compact head, persistent. It’s a true Belgian beer, with a solid backbone and lovely yeast character, spicy; it has the extra touch of dusty roasted malts in the aroma and flavor; the final is quite spicy, and the bitterness is above the average for Belgian beers; although covered by roastiness, the hopping seems powerful.

Anchor Liberty

Originally brewed in 1975 to commemorate Paul Revere's ride, this brew is a heavily hopped ale (Cascade hops) with a copper color and a hoppy nose.

This is a one-time-only beer, brewed prior to the closure of BrewWharf for the Americans, during the London Olympics 2012. Brewed from a trove of riches, aka, the hopstore, the beer included Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe and Citra hops, great coffee from Coleman Coffee, (in near by Borough) over great malts from all over the place. We even added some lactose for good measure. If you’re looking for a something rich to sit down too, this may be the one. Brewed to drink, selfishly, not to share in inches. It’s strong, black, smells of coffee and hops. We like it, we hope you do too..."

Dark Star Green Hop

An already full flavoured IPA, made with the very aromatic Simcoe hops is then made even bigger by using fresh ‘green’ hops infused into the slowly conditioning beer. Designed for those who like their hops as an extreme sport!

Jupiler Belgian Pils

Belgium's #1 beer - Without this beer there would be hardly any café signs in Belgium. Interbrew’s last site in French speaking Belgium. Output is over 2 million hectolitres per annum and it is said that in Wallonia one in two beers drunk is Jupiler.

Durham Diabolus

Origin Our own innovation. Temptation with added gueuze yeast.

Tasting Notes An aroma of cider and spirit-like qualities of higher alcohols is a truthful introduction to a highly complex soured Imperial Stout. Diabolus is halfway between the acidic freshness of gueuze and heavy roast of Temptation. Delve deeper into this complex beer and notice the horse blanket aroma of brettanomyces and the salty tang of Bovril. A second or third mouthful reveals smoother, maltier qualities. After nine months in the bottle the sharp acidic flavours make way for the smoother qualities of Temptation revealing vinous qualities similar to an intense red wine.

Recommendations Not for everyone. This challenging beer is an aquired taste for the connoisseur only. Try with strong cheeses such as stilton and rocquefort.

Timmermans Oude Gueuze Limited Edition

Oude Gueuze is an appellation controlee : its label is protected. It is also known as the champagne of beers, especially as it is only available as a limited edition. Timmermans Oude Gueuze’s special flavour derives from its time-honoured method of preparation. It is a blend of old lambic, which has been aged for three years in wooden barrels, and young lambic which ensures spontaneous fermentation in the bottle. The different lambics are carefully selected by the brewer to obtain a perfect flavour. After it has been produced, Timmermans Oude Gueuze, which is refermented for four months in the bottle, continues to improve for 20 years.!

The flavour of Timmermans Oude Kriek, refermented in the bottle, is without comparison. The cherries from which it derives its taste and colour it features traditionally come from Schaerbeek. Slightly acidic and with a wonderful bouquet, this natural and hence unpredictable brew requires careful handling throughout its long maturation period. Created from a blend of old and young lambic, Timmermans Oude Kriek keeps for 12 years. Like Timmermans Oude Gueuze, this is a precious drink, available in a limited edition only !

Urthel Saisonniere

On June 28 2010, Hildegard gained with her latest creation, Urthel Saisonnière, the prestigious World Beer Award 2010 for Europe's Best Seasonal Pale Ale. This is something to be proud of.

Urthel Saisonnière, brewed since November 2009, is a top-fermented blond Special Ale with refermentation from bottle (bottle conditioned). Urthel Saisonnière is unfiltered so the best of the malts and hops stays here it belongs. In the beer. It has a wide pallet of the finest rich aromas and a full subtle bitter taste. That makes Urthel Saisonnière a thirst-quenchener of 6.0% ABV with a "bite".

Nicely poured in its origanal extraordinary glass Urthel Saisonnière becomes a beautiful foam head. This is due to the 20% of wheat which is used.

To fully enjoy Urthel Saisonnière, you have to pour first half the bottle, then give it a twist (3x) to release the yeast and the wheat from the bottom and then pour the rest of the bottle into the glass.

La Rulles Triple

La Rulles Triple is a unique Belgian triple. Brewed with American west coast hops and the special yeast created by Orval Trappist brewery, it marries the flavors of two different worlds.

La Rulles Triple is brewed with Pilsner malt, as well as Warrior and Amarillo hops from the Yakima valley in Washington state. The beer is then fermented with Orval's top fermenting triple yeast. This rare yeast lends the ale a more complex character. Secondary fermentation is done in bottle with dark candy sugar. Fermentation: Primary fermentation: Between 10 to 12 days. Dark candy sugar is used for the secondary fermentation in bottles (3 weeks) and kegs (4 weeks) Maturation: Between 10 and 14 days. Yeast: Top fermenting yeast from Orval Trappiste Brewery

La Rulles Estival

La Rulles summer specialty Estivale is a Belgian blonde ale with a strong hoppy character. This beer was first created to celebrate the brewery's 5th anniversary in 2005. This beer uses the same American west coast hops from Washington state as the La Rulles Triple, Warrior and Amarillo. Estivale has a lower gravity (5.2% alcohol) and less sweetness. Top fermenting yeast from Orval Trappist Brewery add to the complex flavor. It's meant to be drunk cold to refresh you during the hot spring and summer months.

The beer's name, Estivale, is "summer" in French.

La Rulles Brune

La Rulles Bruin pours a dark brown body, looking quite clear, and topped by a finger-thick beige head leaving lacings. The aroma is roasted, tending towards burnt, followed by dried fruits and some grassy, resiny hops. The flavor is sweet and lightly caramel-ish, with raisins, bitterness and some sourish hints. Medium to full body, soft and nicely carbonated.

Gavroche

is a character in Victor Hugo's 19th century novel, "Les Misérables" a rebellious yet always generous little urchin, living by his wits on the streets of Paris Red ale beer (8.5 % alc./vol.) refermented in the bottle. Gavroche is a strong, red beer, in which the deep malt flavour and brisk hoppiness are very well balanced ; and the whole is gracefully accentuated by fruity flavours derived from a special top-fermenting yeast. This is a rare French example an ale refermented in the bottle - Gavroche must be served with care (leaving behind the fine yeast sediment) at about 10°C

CH'TI Ambrée

The CH'TI Ambrée seduces the drinker with its entrancing copper colours and effuses rich and powerful aromas of subtly roasted malts. It is a flavoursome beer, balanced and thirst quenching. Its quality was recognised by the awarding of a Gold Medal in the 2003 World Beer Selection, Brussels and a Silver Medal at the Paris Concours Général Agricole 2004 and 2005.

The CH'TI Ambrée was selected among the 100 best world beers in the work "Die 100 Besten Biere der Welt" by Michael Rudolf. A "Must try!".

"I’m dead chuffed to announce that we have finally managed to get our act together and bring a new premium bottled beer into the Dark Star camp.

Since I first brewed Six Hop, about 4 years ago, it has proven to be a runaway success in cask, selling out before it’s even fermented.

So, pestering the rest of the team at Dark Star and pulling on the shirt sleeves of the MD like a little child, whining till I got my way – we can now offer, what will hopefully be the first in a series of bottled beers from our monthly specials. This will mean we can get some of our extra special beers to a wider audience.

For those of you who haven’t had the beer, it’s a 6.5% beast in the vein of American IPA’s, copper in colour, with a serious amount of malt and hopped to buggery with Cascade, Citra, Centennial, Simcoe, Columbus and Amarillo. There are 4 kettle hop additions, a massive whirlpool addition and an even bigger dry hop addition after fermentation, stretching the hoptimiser to it’s limits.

The beer was sent down to be bottled by the excellent team at Bath Ales. I picked these guys because of their fantastic bottling set up, quality control and general all round attention to detail. The beer has been filtered but not pasteurised, thereby giving stability but preserving as much hop aroma as possible.

I took a few samples off the bottling line and am really pleased with how it’s come out – it’s fresh tasting whilst maintaining the complexity of the cask version. The cases will be in stock at the brewery as of today – I hope you like it!"
